Mallow goes to Scattery Island

Our latest trip for June was to Scattery Island Co Clare. Scattery Island is in the Shannon river and is accessed from Kilrush by ferry and passes through a lock as the ocean and river meet. it boasts 6 churches some as old as the 12th century. It was inhabited by monks in the past  and the patron saint is St Senan. It is said it was previously inhabited by a monster and St Senan was sent by the lord to kill the monster and allow people to inhabit the island. Families lived there until the 80's It is extremely peaceful and the ground is very soft and spongy like a carpet. Unfortunately it is also full of rabbit holes. On the day we were there it was dry but very cold something we did not expect in the month of June when we planned this trip.l hopwever I would like to go back there on a fine day. We found it very enjoyable.
Our first stop from Mallow was ar JJ Clarkes pub/restaurant in Bunratty where we got a great welcome and fresh baked scones with cream and blackberry jam! I love blackberry jam and we seldom get it.lovely coffee and tea too. Excellant place.
Then we headed for Kilrush and the ferry to Scattery Island. the ferry staff were lovely and couldnt be more accomodating. On the return trip we got coffee/tea and biscuits.
We then went to Kildimo and the ferry for Tarbert and proceeded to Newcastle West for our dinner. We had a delicious meal at Longcourt house hotel. I highly recommend the staff there and of course the food was delicious. A long day but very enjoyable.
